Pregnant women suffering from depression in their second trimester slept better and experienced less depression and anxiety when they participated in weekly yoga and tai chi classes, according to researchers from the University of Miami School of Medicine.
The study was done to determine if an alternative remedy to traditional medication could successfully help pregnant women with a variety of symptoms. The women practiced in a group for 20 minutes per week over a 12-week period.
The positive effects of Yoga have been reported for pregnant women for years. The benefits include: less stress, anxiety and pain throughout pregnancy, less pregnancy discomfort, and less painful labor as well as less time in labor.
