Despite your best efforts to know all the possible changes your body can under go during pregnancy, Surprise, here are ten more you may or may not have known:
1.Nesting Instinct - Your deep seeded need to prepare your home for your baby by constantly cleaning and decorating. Enjoy, it's a natural instinct.
2.Concentrate-itis - The inability to concentrate. You feel worn-out all the time, forgetful (paying bills, missing appointments and mentally you feel a bit "fuzzy despite being well rested. Preoccupation with the baby is partly the cause and hormonal changes, the other part. What can you do about it? Stay on track by making little lists to help you remember important dates and appointments.
3. Mood Swings - If you suffer from premenstrual syndrome your likely to suffer more severe mood swings when you're pregnant.
4. Bra Size - Did you know that your breasts can continue to grow
throughout your pregnancy!
5. Skin - The "pregnancy glow" is only one of many skin changes you many experience during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and the stretching of your skin to accommodate a larger body. Some women develop brownish and yellowish patches called the "mask of pregnancy" on there faces. Some women may develop a dark line on the midline of the lower abdomen as well as hyper-pigmentation of the nipples, external genitalia and anal region. This discoloration is due to hormonal changes causing the body to produce more pigmentation. Unfortunately, the body may not produce this increased pigmentation evenly. So the skin may appear "splotchy". You can't really do anything to prevent it. But wearing sunscreen and avoiding UV light can minimize the effects.
Acne is also common during pregnancy because the skin's sebaceous glands increase their oil production.
6. Hair & Nails - Many women experience a change in hair texture and growth during pregnancy. The good news: The hormones secreted by your body will cause your hair to grow faster and fall out less. The bad news: Most women lose a significant amount of hair in the postpartum period or after they stop breast feeding. Hair can also grow in unwanted areas: face, belly or around the nipples. Hair can become drier, oily or even change color.
Nails - Many women report nails that grow stronger and faster. Some women report nails that split and break easily during pregnancy. Like hair these changes aren't permanent. If your nails tend to split and break during pregnancy, keep them trimmed and avoid chemicals in nail polish and nail polish remover.
7. Shoe Size - That's right; your feet may swell keeping you out of your favorite shoes. If this is you, wear slip on shoes in a larger size. Remember comfort is most important.
8. Hi "Gumby" - Relaxin, a hormone produced by your body to prepare the pelvic region and cervix for birth. Relaxin also softens the ligaments, making your joints less stable and more prone to injury. It's easy to overstretch and strain your pelvis, lower back and knees. When exercising or lifting objects, move slowly and avoid sudden movements.
9. Varicose Veins, Hemorrhoids and Constipation - Enlarged veins in the legs and genital area that result from blood pooling in veins as a result of pregnancy hormones. You can reduce your changes by: avoiding sitting and standing for long periods of time. Wearing loose fitting clothing. Wear support stocking. Elevating your feet when you sit.
Hemorrhoids - varicose veins in the rectum, very common during pregnancy. Hemrrhoids are extremely painful. They bleed, itch and sting especially during and after bowl movements. Sometimes coupled with constipation.
Constipation - is common throughout pregnancy because pregnancy hormones slow down digestion. During the 2nd & 3rd trimester as the uterus stretches' to accommodate a growing baby, it presses against the large intestine making it difficult to have a bowel movement. Want to prevent hemorrhoids and constipation? Eat foods rich in fiber, drink lots of water & exercise daily. Stool softeners (not laxatives) may help. If you have hemorrhoids, see your doctor for a cream or ointment that can shrink them.
10. Fluids Will Flow - On delivery day: your water may or may not break before contractions begin. Some women experience nausea and vomiting during labor & delivery. Some women experience diarrhea and flatulence before and during labor. During the pushing phase of labor some women lose control of their bowls and bladder. How do you handle this: Have a birth plan that communicates your wishes to your health care provider about how to handle the discomforts of labor and delivery.
Let's face it, lots of surprises at the end of 9 months - but it will all be worth it once you hold your baby in your arms.
